Cherry Point Spouses Club held its annual scholarship and assistance awards banquet during the evening of June 3, 2021, and presented $80,000 of scholarships and grants for the surrounding schools and libraries at Miller’s Landing, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, North Carolina.

For more than four decades, the Whistle Stop Thrift Shop on MCAS Cherry Point has enabled the Cherry Point Spouses Club to donate significant amounts of monetary scholarships and assistance awards to the MCAS Cherry Point community. This year, 30 scholarships were presented to 16 dependents graduating high school and 14 spouses who are continuing education in college.

The scholarships are fully merit-based awards. Applicants were evaluated on GPA, resumes showcasing volunteer work in their community and leadership qualities, as well as essays submitted by the applicants expanding on their experiences with resiliency and adapting to the pandemic-impacted school year.

“This unassuming shop is living proof of what can be accomplished when volunteers work together toward the common goal of supporting our precious Marine Corps families,” said Chel Cunningham, the president of the Cherry Point Spouses Club.

The Whistle Stop Thrift Shop is run solely by volunteers. Students are eligible to receive scholarships to any school that accepts the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The grants provide assistance to schools and libraries to help update equipment to make programs run smoother.
