Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Smith, Marine Transport Squadron 1’s search and rescue non commissioned officer in charge, jumps into the freezing Atlantic waters during search and rescue training missions just off the coast of eastern North Carolina, Jan. 12. The mission of the exercisew was to rescue the supposed stranded victim Gunnery Sgt. William B. Cordoza, VMR-1’s quality assurance chief, with the help of an HH-46E SAR helicopter.
