Air Force goes winless on Day 2 of Aggie shootout

1 Nov 2004 |

The 17th-ranked Air Force Academy water polo team was again unable to pick up a victory against a conference opponent, dropping both games Oct. 31 at the University of California-Davis’ Aggie Shootout here. The Falcons lost a close game, 4-3, to UC-Santa Cruz, before falling to 14th-ranked UC-Davis, 11-6.

Air Force (4-18) was involved in a defensive battle against UCSC, as the score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first half. A third quarter goal by the UCSC Slugs gave them the lead, but the Falcons were able to come back to tie the game.

UCSC again took a lead in the fourth quarter, but with just under two minutes remaining in regulation, Josh Jewett scored the equalizer to keep the Falcons’ hopes alive. However, the Slugs were able to pull off the upset as Joel McKown broke the stalemate, scoring his second goal of the quarter with just 24 seconds remaining.

In the game, Jewett led Falcon scorers with two goals, with Murphey Morgan adding the other.

Against the Aggies, Air Force got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. But once UC-Davis got on the board at the 6:13 mark in the second quarter, its offense took off. The Aggies outscored the Falcons 11-3 for the remainder of the game en route to the 11-6 victory.

For the Falcons, Morgan and Clark Condict had two goals each, while Jewett and Eric Swenson added a goal each.

Air Force, now 2-7 in the Western Water Polo Assocation, embarks upon a trip to Los Angeles on Nov. 6 and 7 as it wraps up the regular season with four conference games. The Falcons start out against Loyola Marymount University and University of Redlands on Nov. 6, before facing off against Chapman University and Pomona College on Nov. 7.
