Cheers and motivational encouragements were heard
throughout the long awaited competition where Headquarters and Headquarters
Squadron and Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 challenged each other’s
strength, speed and sheer determination for bragging rights at the semi-annual
field meet, Oct. 23.
Marines
from both squadrons participated in separate events including pull ups, a 7-ton
truck pull and a fireman’s carry relay, where participants hoist their partner
of near equal weight on their shoulders and sprint to a finish line.
“The
field meet lets you measure up against your peers and it makes the Marines
better by trying to out-do each other,” said Gunnery Sgt. Lee Green, the
logistics chief for MWHS-2 and a
judge for the competition. “It is a good thing and also gets the
Marines out of their work environment and into a scenario where their bragging
rights are on the line.”
According
to Green, the Marines relied on teammates for competitive relay races and
endurance obstacle courses during the event. The competition encompassed
the value of teamwork as they competed alongside their unit for the pride of
their squadron.
“It builds camaraderie through friendly competition
with the two units,”
said Cpl. Maxwell Matossanchez, an administrative specialist with H&HS and
a competitor in the event. “It definitely brings out the
competitive spirit knowing that your entire squadron is cheering for you and
counting on you at that very moment to come out on top.”
A Marine cannot lose, it goes against everything he
or she believes in. These competitions are about winning, Matossanchez explained. Competition
reignites a fire in a Marines heart that he was introduced to during recruit
training.
The
Marines of MWHS-2 came out on top once again while H&HS gave a valiant
effort with both squadrons displaying teamwork and building comradery.
