Leave a comment below letting us know what other #AviationAcademics you’d like us to cover! -------------------------------------------- “F” is for Forward Arming and Refueling Point – The primary mission of a forward arming refueling point is to provide fuel and ammunition to combat aircraft in a minimal amount of time. A FARP is mobile and expedient and allows for arming and refueling in many different places. FARPs can support both rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft. An average amount of time an aircraft will spend at a FARP is approximately 15 minutes. The U.S. Marine Corps units that conduct FARP operations are Marine Wing Support Squadrons. 2nd MAW has four MWSS squadrons; MWSS-271, 272, 273, and 274.

II MEF Marines truck through refueler course on MCAS Cherry Point

A mobile training team educates 24 II Marine Expeditionary Force Marines on the basics of operating a semi-trailer refueler truck during a month-long course at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., May 1-24, 2017. The instructors, based out of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., travel to various bases to give semi-trailer refueler classes. The course was filled with a combination of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Marines and various Marines from units throughout II MEF. Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 participates in the Canadian Military Exchange Program with 436 Tactical Support Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force near Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., May 3, 2017. Capt. Torrey Price and Capt. Edward Fagan, both flew the KC-130J Super Hercules during a training exercise to improve their air-to-air refueling skillset. Participating in air-to-air refueling training exercises provides pilots with the opportunity to maintain readiness, re-affirm their skills, and improve on lessons learned. Air-to-air refueling missions provide the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing with the capability to extend the length of time an aircraft can remain in the air while conducting missions. Marines assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 conduct forward arming and refueling point operations during the Weapons and Tactics Instructor 2-17 course near Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, AZ, April 29, 2017. The mission of the FARP is to provide fuel and ordnance necessary for rotary and fixed-winged aircraft while in a forward-deployed environment.
