This year Fire Prevention Week is held from 4-10 October, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began 8 October 1871. During this week, the Cherry Point Fire and Emergency Services typically go out to surrounding schools to teach kids about how to stay fire safe. Due to COVID-19, the Cherry Point Fire and Emergency Services went virtual to ensure that our community continued to stay educated on how to stay safe in case of a fire in your home. When it comes to fire safety and fire importance, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, prides themselves in being fire safe and ready for an emergency at any moment. In the words of Brandee Ridgway, Fire Inspector at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Fire Department, “If you have a fire safety frame of mind as you walk through that workspace or you see something that needs attention and you can remedy that, fix it or remove the fire hazard, you have made that as fire safe as you can.” (U.S. Marine Corps Video by Lance Cpl. Across the installation we have implemented measures to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Masks are required in all major facilities, personnel and their families are encouraged to social distance and sanitation measures have been implemented to keep our installation healthy. However, we must remember that these basic efforts are put in place for a reason, and the only way to keep the number of positive COVID cases down within our community is to take them seriously. In this instance, complacency has the real ability to kill.

As we kick off Fire Prevention Week, we would like to give you a few tips on how to keep your home safe from fires. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., hosts the annual Sexual Assault and Awareness Month 5K run April 7, 2017. The run is designed to bring people together in order to raise awareness on sexual assault. “This is about awareness and prevention,” said Brig. Gen. Matthew Glavy. “This is about rededicating ourselves as Marines and as Sailors to doing the right thing and protecting each other to protect our mission.” More than 1,100 service members and members of the community came together to show their support and participate in the event.
