On Dec 7, 1941, just before 8 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time, Japanese forces launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, an American naval base located in Honolulu. Fighter planes dropped bombs and torpedoes, destroying or damaging nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships and more than 300 airplanes. The very next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous Day of Infamy speech, marking the United States entrance into World War II. Bonus Fact: Construction began on Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point in November 1941, just 17 days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. This expedited construction on Cherry Point. The installation would then be a primary location for training for service to the Pacific theater. During 1943, MCAS Cherry Point also served as a base for anti-submarine operations in the Atlantic.

For personnel living in barracks 4881, it’s important to know your limit. The amount of alcohol you can keep in your barracks room for service members ranking E-1 to E-3 is either a six pack of beer, six pack of wine coolers, or one bottle of wine. For service members ranking E-4 to E-5 is either a 12 pack of beer, 12 pack of wine coolers, or one bottle of wine. Don’t forget to always have a designated driver should you plan to leave the barracks after consuming alcohol, and most importantly stay safe this weekend! (U.S. Marine Corps video by Sgt. Know Your Location Here at MCAS Cherry Point, we are fortunate to have our military emergency responders and civilian emergency responders ready to answer the call in our time of need. However, their ability to assist is often slowed by one major factor – those calling for aid don’t know where to send help. Our emergency personnel’s jobs require them to arrive on-scene as soon as possible to assist in any given emergency situation. When not enough information is provided, their response time is hindered and dispatch and the responding emergency personnel lose crucial time. Whether working out, driving around or just trying to get to a new location for the first time, it’s important to keep the habit of knowing your present location at all times, on-duty and off-duty so that those emergency personnel who work day and night can better serve those who protect our country. As we depart for the upcoming Columbus Day 96-hour liberty period, remember to drive responsibly. Driving fatigued is just as dangerous as driving under the influence.
