Range coaches stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, shoot the new Annual Rifle Qualification (ARQ) at the range on base, Oct. 6, 2021. At the start of the fiscal year, Oct. 1, 2021, the Marine Corps officially introduced its new ARQ. This new course of fire will require Marines to be more independent and self-aware of the mission. It will also include the use of barricades, and focus on positional shooting, providing a more realistic way to train. The purpose of this new ARQ is to boost lethality, promote combat mindset and train Marines like they fight.

U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Shane Ryan, a range coach on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point describes how coaches and their instruction impact the Marine Corps’ and individual Marines warfighting capabilities, June 29, 2021. The range coaches under-go a three week course that teaches them, everything from the fundamentals of handling and firing a service rifle and pistol, to understanding physics and factors that effect a Marines shot. Upon graduation of the course, coaches return to their parent command to teach and mentor their fellow Marines on proper and efficient marksmanship skills.
