Free marriage and singles retreat available to 419th FW reservists

4 Feb 2008 | Bryan Magaña

A marriage enrichment seminar and a singles retreat are available for free to 419th Fighter Wing reservists on April 18-20 in Park City.

The marriage seminar is designed to address common marital issues among military families and provide tools to enrich marriages. It will touch on topics such as problem solving, commitment and sexuality. It is available to the first 80 couples to RSVP and covers the cost of their stay at the Park City Marriott, breakfasts and lunches, and Friday evening's ice breaker. Dinners are not included.

Married members are encouraged to sign up, even if they are not having marital problems, as the goal is to enrich any marriage. It is only open to 419th reservists and their spouses.

This year, organizers have added an additional 40 slots for single reservists, who can participate in classes geared toward premarital issues, including what to look for in a future mate.

Staff Sgt. Cassandra Corrado of the 419th Military Personnel Flight and her husband, Tech. Sgt. Nathan Corrado of the 419th Maintenance Squadron, took advantage of the getaway last year and found it to be a positive experience.

"It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot," said Sergeant Corrado. "It was nice to spend a weekend away for free."

Sergeant Corrado said she and her husband learned how to identify the underlying problems in common disagreements among husbands and wives. The classes are casual and interactive. Instructors give attendees a chance to practice and apply what they have learned.

"We learned a lot about communication," Sergeant Corrado said, noting that she utilizes the speaker-listener techniques she learned. "It's pretty relaxed, and you get to know some of the other couples."

The Utah Legislature has issued a grant to the Utah Guard to sponsor the seminars. For the past two years, the Guard has held slots for reservists as well.

"It's open to all the part-time warriors," said Lt. Col. Barbara Godsey, who is collecting names of those interested.

Reservists can email their name, daytime phone number, e-mail address, reserve unit, and spouse's name, if applicable, to Colonel Godsey or Lt. Col. Craig Rogers.

If all the slots are filled, members will be placed on a waiting list and contacted if there are cancellations.
