Let’s see what happened “On This Day.” Tuesday, June 6, 1944, American troops performed a huge operation in what history knows as the Invasion of Normandy. The battle for Normandy is among one of the many fronts that took place on the beaches of Western Europe part of Operation Overlord. More than 160,000 Allied troops participated in the invasion. On this Day June 22, 1945, the Battle of Okinawa officially ended. Marines, Sailors and Soldiers alike had participated in what is known as the last official battle of World War II.
