For National Doctor’s Day, we are going to celebrate the Navy “Docs”, or medical professionals, that have protected and treated our Marines over the years. The Medal of Honor is the highest award given to U.S. military personnel. After his squadron commander was shot down during the initial attack upon an enemy aircraft carrier, Capt. Fleming led the remainder of the division with such fearless determination that he dove his own plane to a low altitude of 400 feet before releasing his bomb. His aircraft was hit 179 times during the attack, but escaped with only two minor wounds. The following day, after less than four hours of sleep, Fleming led the second division of his squadron in an assault upon a Japanese battleship. During an approach Fleming’s aircraft was struck and set afire but continued his attack. He released his bomb at 500 feet to score a near-miss on the stern of his target, then crashed into the sea in flames. His dauntless perseverance and unyielding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Capt. Henry T. Elrod became the first American aviator to be awarded the Medal of Honor during World War II due to his efforts in the defense of Wake Island against the Japanese. Elrod shot down two enemy aircraft and became the first man to sink a major warship by small caliber bombs delivered from a fighter-type aircraft. After his plane was disabled by hostile fire, Elrod took control of a flank on the ground in defense of the island and he and his men fought vigorously against the Japanese. On 23 December, Elrod led his men with bold aggressiveness until he fell, mortally wounded. His superb skill as a pilot, daring leadership and unswerving devotion to duty distinguished him among the defenders of Wake Island. He gallantly gave his life for his country. As a village burned and bullets whizzed by, 1st Lt. Christian F. Schilt, went above and beyond the call of duty as a Marine Corps aviator, earning himself the Medal of Honor. 1st Lt. Christian F. Schilt was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during an insurrection at Quilali, Nicaragua in January 1928. Schilt volunteered under extremely dangerous conditions to evacuate wounded by air and transport a relief commanding officer to assume charge of the situation. Under hostile infantry fire, Schilt took off a total of 10 times evacuating casualties and bringing supplies to others in desperate need. His actions resulted in three lives being saved. Marines assigned to Marine Air Support Squadron 1 participated in the annual Chieftain run at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Nov. 16-17, 2016. The Chieftains collectively ran for 24 hours to pay tribute to MASS-1 Marines who have passed away.
