Laughter and Christmas music filled the air as thousands of Marines, Sailors and their families ice skated, bounced; and slid their way through several festive outdoor activities during Winterfest at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Dec. 12-13.

“We wanted to bring something new, unique and holiday related here to Cherry Point,” said Beth McKenzie, marketing director with Marine Corps Community Services. “We are hoping that the all of our patrons can relax and enjoy a few hours of Christmas fun with their families and friends.”

The event featured a synthetic outdoor ice skating rink. There were also several large inflatable attractions like a giant snowman bouncy house, a snow globe where families could have their picture taken and a Snowzilla slide. Additionally, there was a toboggan tunnel and a snow maze.

Representatives from Food Lion were also in attendance giving away fresh produce to families.

“This event raises the morale of Marines and Sailors by allowing them to have fun and bond with their friends and families in a safe environment,” said McKenzie.

Families enjoyed the free, two-day event sponsored by MCCS that featured some of winter’s most family-friendly, fun events.

“My family decided to come to this Winterfest because we are celebrating our son’s birthday and it seemed like a fun way for the kids to run around, see Santa and embrace the holiday season,” said Gunnery Sgt. Cory Sangster, company gunnery sergeant with Company B, Marine Wing Communication Squadron 28.

According to Sangster, Cherry Point is a small, tight knit community that always finds fun ways to bring families together for events throughout the year.

“I really enjoy coming to these events, especially when they involve the whole family. It gets people out, having fun and into the Christmas spirit,” said Sangster.
