MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. (June 10, 2010) -- Surrounded by peers and members of the community, Sgt. Joshua L. Hawley and his family were named the Cherry Point family of the quarter, June 10, at the New Bern Golf and Country Club. Hawley is the noncommissioned officer in charge of the electric shop with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252.
“Since arriving in Eastern Carolina in July of 2006, Hawley has continuously served the community by working as a volunteer,” said Lt. Col. David C. Morris, the commanding officer of VMGR-252. Morris proceeded to read Hawley’s humbling list of accolades.
The Baton Rouge, La., native served as the captain of a volunteer fire department for 18-months, committed more than 2,000 volunteer hours as an emergency medical technician with Bridgeton Emergency Medical Services and devoted more than 500 hours to New Bern Craven County Rescue squad. Hawley also made time to teach CPR to more than 90 people.
The luncheon attendees looked at one another in disbelief as the list was read. They showed their gratitude by showering the Hawley family with gifts.
Hawley was nearly speechless. “I felt like one of those people on the TV show, “Extreme Makeover.’” Solidifying his selfless stance, he explained, “You don’t seek stuff like that out. That’s not the reason my wife and I do it.”
“Sgt. Hawley’s wife, Mary E. Hawley, mirrors Sgt. Hawley’s dedication,” said Morris. “While she’s not able to attend this ceremony due to her work schedule, she’s definitely here in spirit.”
Hawley’s wife is an occupational therapy assistant at Carolina East Rehabilitation Hospital, and Morris stated she has volunteered for the last 10 years.
Hawley’s two stepdaughters, Hayli and Jordan, were also in attendence, sitting next to grandma in their matching dresses.
Hawley credits his commitment to community to 12 years of being a Boy Scout.
“I guess I got addicted to volunteer service, and there are so many volunteers that aren’t recognized,” he said.
“He’s a dedicated Marine and a role model,” said Morris. “He has made a positive impact on our community.”
Hawley modestly dimmed his limelight with one statement.
“You can stand by and hope somebody else does it, or you can get out there and do it yourself.”
