Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point recently announced dates for one of the area’s premier spectator events. The Cherry Point air show, the region’s largest of its type, has been slated for May 21-23.

The East Coast’s largest Marine Corps air station will open its gates to the public for an open house highlighting the latest in war fighting technology and military aviation.

With the recent decision to return to a biennial schedule, the 2010 air show also marks the anticipated return of the Navy’s premier flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels.

Flying the F/A-18 Hornet, the Blue Angels enhance Navy and Marine Corps recruiting efforts and also serve as representatives of the naval services to the public both nationally and internationally.

On May 21, the air show will again host the state’s only “night show,” featuring afterburners, rocket trucks, aerial pyrotechnics, skydivers and a wall of flame – all culminating in the area’s largest fireworks display. Gates for the night show open at 5 p.m., with acts commencing at twilight.

Full day shows with a large variety of military and civilian aerobatic demonstrations, plus dozens of historic and modern military static displays.

Military acts will include the Blue Angels, a Marine air ground task force demonstration highlighting the Marine Corps’ fighting capabilities, and several other military jet demonstrations.

The air show will also feature activities for children, various rides and simulators. General admission and parking are free, but paid premium seating is available. Paid seating levels and pricing will soon be available at the air show’s Web site.

The Cherry Point air show is currently the only air show scheduled in North Carolina during 2010. For more information on the Cherry Point air show, please visit the official air show website at http://www.cherrypointairshow.com or call (866) 946-4762.
