Carteret County Service Person of the Quarter

The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee recognized Lance Cpl. Matthew Freire, an aircraft avionics technician, assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 542, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, during a ceremony at the Cherry Point Public House, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, Feb. 26, 2025. Lance Cpl. Freire was recognized for his contributions to his command and dedication to his community. Throughout his time at MCAS Cherry Point he’s accumulated more than 150 hours of volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity in New Bern and Normandy Military Musuem in Newport.

“Volunteering helps me to get out of my room and I love hearing other people's stories,” Freire said. “Giving back to the community is something I love taking part in.”

U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Cameron Scribner, an avionics technician assigned to VMFA-542, MAG-14, 2nd MAW, and Freire's staff non-commissioned officer, commented that Freire's initiative, general care toward other, and outgoing spirit in the workplace make him stand out against his peers, “Freire is always looking for ways to improve the workplace and watching out for others wellbeing.”
