MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, NC (Sept. 6, 2019) -- MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, NC (Sept. 6, 2019) — The Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point commanding officer issued an All Clear notification for the air station as of 11:25 a.m., Sept. 6.
The more intense part of Hurricane Dorian affected the installation during the early morning hours of Friday as the community endured sustained winds of 45 knots, with gusts up to 67 knots.
The installation has been manning its Emergency Operations Center around the clock since Sept. 4, and has engaged with local county emergency management officials for regular updates since Sept. 1.
Emergency Services personnel and damage assessment teams were dispatched during the morning as the installation went into Tropical Cyclone Condition 1 R (Recovery) at 8:45 a.m., today.
Some of installation’s facilities received minor damages, there were some isolated power outages, and a few felled trees. The more significant visual damage was to the roof at the Whistle Stop Thrift Shop.
MCAS Cherry Point Commanding Officer Col. Mikel Huber expressed his appreciation to his team and the extended community of partners for the collective efforts made to ensure operations during the weather event.
“Thanks to all of the professionals who helped manage things during the storm and who enabled rapid resumption of services as the storm passed,” he said. “I appreciate the seamless coordination with local community leadership and first responders.”
Huber added, “I also express my gratitude to the Marines, Sailors, civilians and family members of Cherry Point for your patience and understanding during this severe weather event.”
Officials are continuing recovery efforts to return the installation to normal operations, and staying engaged with its community partners to provide support where needed.
