The Havelock Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee hosted a pig pickin’ for nearly 150 Marines assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, Sept. 26, 2017.

The MAC has held the pig pickin’ semiannually since 1988; providing meals for Marines and their families.

“We are a nonprofit organization that partners with the local community to support our active duty and retired members of the military,” said Shannon Adcock, chair of the MAC. “[The pig pickin’] is designed to enhance and maintain community relations with our military service members.”

According to Adcock, the goal is to show appreciation for all of the sacrifices that the military endures in order to provide our community and nation with the freedoms they enjoy.

Marines and family members who attended the pig pickin’ ate fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad and other dishes while enjoying each other’s company.

“I think the pig pickins’ are great,” said H&HS Sgt. Maj. Christopher Davis. “It’s a way to bring all the Marines together to enjoy some good chow and to bring the community on base to see what the Marines are doing.

“The pig pickin’ gives the Marines the ability to put work aside and just enjoy family and fun,” said Davis.
