Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point -- A professional cycling team is scheduled to perform during the Spring Fling event at Cunningham’s Extreme Outdoor Park, March 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The team, King BMX Stunt Shows, includes riders who have ridden in national competitions like the X-Games and the Gravity Games. The team will perform three 30-minute shows throughout the day.
Marine Corps Community Services officials explained part of the reason for bringing the team to the air station is to promote a recent change at Cunningham’s skate park, allowing some bicycles on the ramps, namely bicycle motocross bikes. BMX bikes are used in a variety of sports which emphasize extreme performance, such as expressive jumps over ramps and obstacles.
“When the team is not performing they will be going over bike safety and giving advice on parts for BMX bikes,” said Wayne Harris, Cunningham’s Extreme Outdoor Park coordinator. The pros will also sign autographs, answer biking questions, and help fans fix their bikes and work on tricks.
Harris added some patrons may have the opportunity to ride with the team on Cunningham’s park. If a person wishes to ride with the pros, they must bring with them their own bike and have proper safety equipment including a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads, he explained.
“I am a skater but I think that it is awesome that they are allowing BMX riders to join us in the skate park,” said Lance Cpl. Colton Duran, a powerlines mechanic with Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2 “Bringing in a pro BMX team will be awesome and bring in a lot of new riders.”
Harris explained the Spring Fling was designed to promote the benefits of Cunningham’s to the air station community. Other scheduled events include a rock-climbing wall, volleyball, horseshoes and a cook-out. The Single Marine Program will also give away prizes throughout the day.
