Marines assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, competed against one another during an annual field meet aboard MCAS Cherry Point, Aug. 12.

The annual field meet was also held in celebration of the 75th Anniversaries for MCAS Cherry Point and 2nd MAW.

Marines of all ranks and ages came together to compete in several events testing their strength, teamwork, and unit spirit. Marines competed against one another in an all ranks relay race, rifle relay race, fire-man carry relay, soccer, a 7-ton pull, pull-ups, Dizzy Izzy, tug-of-war, and volleyball.

Marines with both squadrons eagerly volunteered to participate in the events and get an opportunity to go head-to-head.

“It feels good to come out here and go up against master sergeants and officers,” said Cpl. Oscar J. Velazquez Moran, an administrative specialist assigned to MWHS-2. “Some of the competitions, like the Dizzy Izzy, are not just fun, but a challenge. After you spin so many times and the ground underneath you is a blur, all you can do is run hard and listen to your teammates cheer you on.”

The Marines demonstrated speed and agility through taking apart an M16 service rifle and their strength while doing a team pull-up challenge.

Sgt. Maj. Richard D. Thresher, the sergeant major of 2nd MAW, said every Marine possesses a warrior spirit. Regardless of rank, Marines foster a competitive drive. The field meet encourages Marines to showcase their best performance while emulating good sportsmanship.

After numerous events, the total tally came to five points for H&HS and four points for MWHS-2. H&HS took back the traditional field meet trophy from the previous year’s victor, MWHS-2.

Since the first field meet was held in 1995 between the two squadrons, H&HS has won the trophy seven times, including today’s victory, and MWHS-2 has won the trophy 10 times.

“I am just so proud of the Marines and what they have done,” said Brig. Gen. Matthew G. Glavy, the commanding general of 2nd MAW. “I’m proud of how they work. Nothing is easy. We joined the Marine Corps for the challenge and we do challenge them. How they perform makes me feel good and being part of this event today is extra special."
