Marines every day are volunteering their talents and services in the community, to their fellow service members and to various organizations, sacrificing their time to help others.

Marine Attack Squadron 542 awarded Sgt. Shawn H. Rose, an aircraft electrical systems technician the New Bern Military Alliance and Chamber of Commerce Service Person of the Quarter award for his actions toward others during a ceremonial luncheon at the New Bern Country Club in New Bern, Dec. 10.

“Rose distinguished himself among his peers and subordinates alike by living by the phrase that the world does not revolve around him,” said Sgt Maj. Brandon S. Eckardt, sergeant major of VMA-542. “In a contemporary society plagued by a disturbing sense of self-entitlement, Rose endeavored to enrich the lives of others through his volunteer efforts.”

Rose checked into the air station in June of 2015 and was promptly designated as the Single Marine Program representative for his unit, which has given him several opportunities to contribute to the community.

“Some will see Rose as a beacon of integrity,” said Eckardt. “Others will recognize him as an industrious young man who possesses the attribute of initiative and concern for others.”

Having a moral contract with the American public, community service is one of the ways in which Marines can pursue their vital role in meeting the expectations of that contract, added Eckardt.

“Volunteering helps build that altruism in a person,” said Rose. “Not only does it make you a better Marine, but it makes you a better human.”

At the award luncheon, Rose was honored with a proclamation from the mayor of the city of New Bern, along with recognitions from distinguished organizations and vendors of the New Bern area.

“I am honored and overwhelmed with joy to be receiving this award,” said Rose.

Rose explained that volunteering is a personal and professional development tool that can be used for one to go out and help the community and form a positive relationship with everyone, both locally and military.

“If the true measure of a man is what he does for others who can do nothing for him, then I believe we should all view Rose with high regard,” said Eckardt.
