Butler takes charge of VMGR-252, Moses bids farewell

3 Oct 2012 | Cpl. Scott L. Tomaszycki Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point

Maj. Walter J. Butler assumed command of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 from Lt. Col. Charles J. Moses during a ceremony at the squadron's hangar on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Sept. 28.

Moses will assume duties in the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing staff.

In his final address to his Marines, Moses said he facilitated good work by the Marines and they did the rest.

“I made sure they had the time, the tools, and the talent to be able to do their mission,” said Moses. “And then I watched them do miraculous things.”

Butler, the former executive officer of the squadron, said the squadron is already in excellent shape, and his role will be to maintain and improve the squadron’s performance where he can.

"It’s kind of like a race where the commanding officers before me have passed on the baton and just tried to keep running with it and start sprinting harder if they can," said Butler. "My goal is to continue the path that we’re on set by my predecessors. To build on what they’ve done, the programs we’ve got, and the personalities we have here now."

Butler’s career highlights include commanding a squadron detachment during combat missions in Afghanistan. His personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 14 Flight Awards, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
